This year, I'd like to be able to master a few things.
The titles may be pushing it, but since this is a seemingly-new-year-themed-entry it makes perfect sense :)
1. Choose your battles
I'd like to be able to say by the end of this year "I only acquire if I can afford it, it is of good quality, something I will utilise and would stand the test of time".
Well, there really wasn't anything that I acquired which I could not afford. I think emphasis must be made on the utilisation part.
Obviously, my tabo doesn't have to be branded. Or of superior quality. A tabo is a tabo. And well, I don't even have a tabo.
2. Don't sweat the small stuff
If I go to a jewelry store, resisting to buy is a breeze, because things cost a lot. But if I go to a clothing store, it is very easy for me to buy something, because the cost is (relatively) low.
Another shirt. Another dress.
What I failed to realise--actually, more on what I refused to acknowledge was that perhaps I was spending a lot on these small things that I could easily have had enough to get something that would give me more satisfaction had I said "No" those times.
Don't get me started on the law of diminishing returns.
3. Know when you are "in love" as opposed to being "in love with love"
Once upon a time, I saw a pink sweater that I liked but did not buy is since I felt I didn'tt want to spend that much. For a couple of weeks I constantly thought about it.
One day, I decided to get it, only to realise that it was gone.
It has been around 12 years since but I still think about it.
In reality, if I got it then it would probably sit in my closet right now. Waiting for a chance to be worn.
It seems like an opportunity loss to me because I perceive it as the one (sweater) that got away.

(h)old
I know I am getting old. And not because of my cholesterol or blood pressure—I’m quite lucky that way (for now).
I know because when the person sitting behind me in the plane started pushing my seat with what I could only assume to be his knees, I breathed deeply, relaxed more and thought this is more taxing to him that it is to me, there is no way he could keep it up till touchdown. True enough, he gave up after less than five minutes—five minutes that probably felt like forever to him.
I know because I have sleepless nights thinking about retirement—even when I’m not even middle age. Maybe this is not old age but paranoia, but this concern did not keep me up during my teens—or twenties.
I know because I’d rather stay home and hang out with my sister than go to the mall and people watch. I still like doing that, but I’d rather get to know the person my sister is becoming—a patient mother, devoted wife and a very mature woman while remaining a thoughtful daughter and kind and generous sister.
I know because I catch myself saying that’s too sweet not only to dessert, but also drinks.
I know because when going out of town, I had become interested in bringing back local produce.
I know because the term open house sounds fun to me.
I know because more and more, I want to spend time with my loved ones because I now truly recognise that nothing lasts forever.

a-TRACK-tion
I had always been mindful of where my money goes to. I would have various ways to keeping track of my expenses. Only now, I realise that all of the solutions that I used were wrong--let us say, not ideal.
While each gave a detailed breakdown, none really gave me the view that I needed.
It was only until a friend told me I saved X amount this month that I realised, what I should be watching. Not the trends, rather the figures.
I am not sure if my spending will change with this new tracking method, but I do know what I would be better at answering the question how did you do in a specific period?--Ahhh, that is the question.

old list
The first thing I did upon waking today was check if my favorite youtube contributor posted something. And there was.
I feel funny posting a photo because of certain reasons.
One of which is that this is a very poor version of the look from the tutorial. Please excuse the unwashed morning face. I just just too excited and wanted to try out the eyes, right there and then.
I had my thoughts about blogging about what a friend blogged about a few days ago--a list of things you feel you are too old for. I commented "juicy couture" on her post for laughs.
This got me thinking about my list. I will type as I think of it, so it is likely that the list will be in a funny order.
I am too old...
1. to deem insurance as unnecessary
2. to smoke a pack and a half of cigarettes when I go out to drink
3. to get wasted every weekend
4. to get wasted every other weekend
5. for the grunge look (another reason why photo is funny)
6. not to make effort to eat more vegetables and less red meat
7. to bother about excuses
8. for unnatural coloured hair dyes, think PINK (not that I was ever tempted)
9. to scrimp on healthcare
10. not to know what and who are most important to me
11. to wear denim cut offs
I think next time, I would write a list of things I would never be too old for.

why hello Spock
1. Raise eyebrows
2. Draw higher eyebrow arch
3. Wear big sunglasses
4. Tilt head at awkward angles
5. Blow hair off forehead every other breath
6. Distract people with outrageous clothes
7. Keep head low--literally
8. Wear turtleneck with Star Trek logo
9. Carry a big stick
10. Ignore self
I think, 10 is good.

again and again, over and over
My day started with a deep cough that caused me to wake up.
I got up, checked the time, took meds and went back to sleep.
I was awoken by a phone call. I took it and then went back to sleep.
My alarm went off. I snoozed and went back to sleep.
My alarm went off--again. I turned it off intuitively, got up and took a bath.
I dressed up.
I contemplated on making a nutella sandwich for breakfast.
I checked my emails and felt the urge to reply to more urgent ones--even if these are due later in the afternoon.
I made the nutella sandwich and put it in my bag.
I checked my emails--again. And covered some of the things I knew on top of my head that I needed to do today.
I contemplated on getting my umbrella from the washing area. Decided against it.
I went down. And realised I needed an umbrella.
I contemplated on getting my umbrella. I went back to get it.
I went down and headed to my bus stop.
=====================================================================================
I would write more just so I have a blog entry that could help insomniacs out a bit, but I am getting sleepy myself.
=====================================================================================
I swear I am never one to not be ready waaay ahead of time.
In fact since I could remember, there were only three occasions wherein I had to go back to the house because I forgot something.
(1) today <-- not sure if this would count as I didn't actually forget it. But since having only two items in a list seems odd to me. Fine.
(2) the day I left my laptop at home
(3) that time we had a barbecue party and planned to head to the concert after the small get together
=====================================================================================
Hmmmmm. No pattern. Like a lot of things ;-)

the cure
It is interesting how people do funny things when they are restless. Or lonely. Or feeling alone.
What never fails to amaze me is the determination and effort involved when seeking attention. Or sympathy. Sometimes, there is even a taste of desperation that goes with it. It is quite obvious of course, to everyone but the person--I think.
As a concerned party, I try to pacify the hunger. But it is never enough. As you see, no one person can satisfy the need. In fact, nothing and no one would be able to accomplish the impossible feat but the actual person.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What do I suggest?
For starters, I would suggest to myself that I stop trying to solve the issue. Because I can't. I am but part of the audience.
To the person, I would suggest the following:
Give. Give to the needy. Volunteer. Talk to others who need someone to listen to them. To receive what you seek, you should give it away. I didn't write that. But it makes a lot of sense.
Clean. To clear your mind, start by cleaning your surroundings. Discard old clothes. Take out shoes you no longer wear. Throw away dated bills, receipts and other files. Rid your place of clutter.
Organise. To bring your self to the intended place, organise your life. Start by organising your things.
Fix. Mend shirts with loose buttons, replace ruined soles and tape ripped pages. There is happiness in piecing together what has fallen apart. Literally. And figuratively.
Create. Bake a cake, cook a meal, paint / sketch something beautiful, take a photo, write a poem or sew a dress. It could be anything that allows you to imagine and express yourself.
Smile. It is the fastest way to make things just a little bit more bearable.

(500) days of summer
Why is it that people around me are fussing about the movie?
Hmmmmmm. Let's see.
1. because the scale is always tipped. no matter how little, how seemingly insignificant, the scale is always tipped.
2. because sometimes the proverbial screen--picture splits and you realise the glaring difference between your expectation and reality.
3. because there is that day, the beginning of summer.
4. because summers end.
5. because sometimes you only remember the good things, and until someone points that out, you are that idiot with selective memory.
6. because when you look back, it pays if you look again.
7. because sometimes she is just not sure.
8. friends my b*lls.
9. because technicalities suck.
10. because sometimes walls crumble.
11. because you want to be the first (and only) one she tells.
12. because you already have a best friend.
13. because you want to be the best friend...if only (and only if) there is more to it.
14. because even if she is of average height, average weight and (slightly above) average sized feet--to you, she can never be average. Or he.
15. because you are never really sure whether coincidences are just that, coincidences.

in SINGness and heatlh
This is my third day skipping work this week. This stint is the longest I have had in a long time. Let us not forget of the two week gig in 2006 and that one week in 2008.
It was only in Singapore that I experienced a lot of things.
Walang Gana. I always thought people who claimed they couldn't eat were just acting up for attention. When I got braces, it didn't stop me from eating the same, when I got retainers, it did not stop me from eating the same, when I am ill, it never stopped me from eating the same--until 2006. For the first time in my life, I was unable to eat. I was hungry, very hungry, but I just couldn't eat. My body won't let me. I recovered from the flu 8 lbs lighter and just when I thought I could keep my health and new size, I gained it all back. Getting a size smaller is not worth not eating for two weeks against your will.
Meds Trauma. We all know that meds are meant to make us feel better and not to tickle the taste buds. We don't take meds because it taste good, we take meds because we have to. The taste had never been a problem for me--until the Singapore issue cough medicine! I don't know if you have tried it, but it is just terrible. The thought of it makes me feel squirmish. Knowing that I have to take it thrice a day makes me think I could scare my self back to health. How about now?
Rashes. The dermatologists did not figure out the cause. They just insist that it was an allergy. To what? No answer. Great. I don't have any allergies, I am never allergic to anything--except this mystery allergen. Only in Singapore. It had been active for around three months. I hope it remains dormant for the rest of my life.
Overactive cells. I noticed a mosquito bite on my thigh. Days later, it started to grow. I thought that it definitely couldn't be a mosquito bite. I self medicated with topical creams. It just grew more. After I had it checked, the doctors said that it was harmless but because it was growing so rapidly, they recommend it to be removed. What was it? A blood vessel cell that found itself on the surface of the skin and decided to multiply. Whoa.
Worn out soles. Okay, so this isn't health related. But I want to put it in anyways. It is only in Singapore that I have thrown out shoes because the soles had worn out. Seriously.

you're too good for her
I saw an article that read Top 10: Signs You're Too Good for Her, and because I had a good laugh out of it, I am sharing the ones I liked.
No.10 - You're always dumbing down conversations around her
And it's not just her -- it's her entire social universe. Her friends, her family and her coworkers all seem to have an extremely limited vocabulary, one that contains more four-letter expletives than a U.S. Army boot camp. If your cat can match her wit, it’s one of the signs you’re too good for her.
No.9 - She f*cks like a porn star
Sure, we all have those fantasies, but if your woman is taking you into uncharted territory that has serious repercussions for personal safety, there's a good chance it's a sign you're too good for her. No limits or boundaries in the intimate sphere means serious problems with self-respect and control in general. Sure the sex will be mind-blowing, but you’ll never know where she’s been or even how she learned her maneuvers, which can only mean one thing…
No.3 - She is devoid of natural curiosity
The universe is a strange and mysterious place. Every day you come across phenomena that nearly cry out for further explanation. At least you thought so, until you met your current girlfriend. If you've been together for a while and you've never heard her mention travel or a book she has read, you're in trouble. Conversations based upon first-hand experience from your day are both powerfully limiting and dull.
No.1 - Her best asset is her looks
Relationships are a growing concern. You're supposed to find other qualities that endear her to you beyond the initial physical attraction. If you haven't found anything like that and in fact have found many qualities that the good looks are covering up for, then you're too good for her. You need to move on and find someone else. If you don't, you're selling yourself short. Strike out in a new direction and find someone who is both physically attractive as well as your equal or better in the other 98% of life.

retrospective writing
Sundays are for reviewing the damage caused by the week that was.
Well, I guess that first line is too dramatic. It makes it seem as though there are significant realizations, events or changes that take place every week. If you think long term, then potentially, there would be. Otherwise the list below would just be another list of as expected useless information.
This week, I realized that:
1. Too much dependency strains friendships and often leads to falling outs. I know what I am talking about here. I was fortunate that for my case, we were able to get past it. We are now better friends than we were, but I was fortunate should be highlighted here.
2. On and off. You are seen as an insane, stupid, hopeless, pathetic person if you are in an on-and-off boyfriend-and-girlfriend relationship; if you are married to the person you have an on-and-off relationship with, you are actually applauded for doing the right thing.
3. More and more people are realizing that I just can't see you in my future is not a break up line, but a reason to break up. Yey!
4. Nerd Herd :) This isn't about that series Chuck, but I am happy to say that more women are discovering how cool nerds are.
5. If you look hard enough and watch enough tv shows, you'd see glimpses of your relationship or past relationships in random segments of most series.
6. If you think you know who left the anonymous comment, you are probably right.
7. People volunteer to make their lives more difficult when they lie.
8. Relationships never end. Relationships however, change.
9. Don't be too quick to say that someone is not paying attention, because it could be the case that you are the one not paying attention.
10. It is not so very easy to shut up and listen.

neneng is away, must find a way (to finish chores so I can still play)
The last ten days were filled with firsts. I'm sure more would be added to the list until Neneng is back from her vacation.
I am undergoing the Stepford Wife Training. I am both Trainer and Trainee. I am not without "consultants" though. I did the following for the first time in my life and did everything well. Walang palpak :)
1. Cooked rice (using rice cooker, not hard core saing)
2. Cooked dinner for my brother and sister-in-law
3. Vacuumed my room
4. Changed my bed sheet, pillowcases, etc.
5. Washed my clothes (using washing machine, not hard core palo palo) <-- white
6. Washed my clothes (using washing machine, not hard core palo palo) <-- colored
7. Hung my clothes to dry
8. Checked if the labada had dried
9. Moved labada from sinampay rack to planchahin rack
10. Folded then stacked pantulog into the designated compartment in my closet
(It is my list, I could split items 4 and 5 if I want!)

friday to saturday
Reasons why I am smiling:
1. Lala of Panyero's rescued my Little Twin Stars pouch.
2. Spent time with Grace, my good friend--and favorite photographer.
3. I'd be watching Rod Stewart tonight!

my 25 things
I am giving in to the 25 things entry people have started posting in Facebook. I decided to post it here instead as it is likely that people who would spend time reading these things about me would go here. I also don't feel comfortable tagging people into a note all about myself. Just so we are clear, let me reinstate, I AM NOT TAGGING ANYONE.
1. The two persons that I love most are my siblings. I don't think I could ask for a better brother and sister. As if I was not lucky enough, God gave me a wonderful sister-in-law and brother-in-law.
2. I love reading books. If I could have my way, I'd build a foundation solely for teaching street children how to read; not only would this improve their opportunities, but also enrich their lives. (I'd also do book reading for them--if they let me.)
3. I am a self taught seamstress. I think I'd like to sew forever.
4. When I grow up, I want to be the best wife and mom that I could be.
5. If you want a question answered, ask. I do.
6. I think the flaw in all my romantic relationships is that I am unable to "surrender" to my partner. I can't seem to entrust my life decisions to anyone but myself. My friends insist that I have a deep fear of com...commit...commitment (there, I can actually type it), I think it is a matter of chancing on an equal.
7. I can't run but I can walk for hours.
8. I enjoy socializing and don't mind talking in front of a crowd but I am an introvert. If you look it up (you'd realize that the "but" in the first sentence should be replaced with "and"), it actually means someone who seeks "alone time". I don't mind shopping, eating out or watching movies by myself.
9. I enjoy wrist watches especially those with complications.
10. Like most Filipinos, I was born into Catholicism. While I believe in the general teachings of my religion, I find that I don't practice it by the book, as my lola would have wanted. I have reached a point wherein I am very comfortable and happy with the relationship I have with the higher being.
11. I think it is weird to be referred to a "sis" when (a) the person is not your sister, (b) you are not a nun and (c) it is pronounced as ziz.
12. Respect is vital in any relationship.
13. I am fond of wearing white. If you look into my closet you will understand the extent of it. It would put Dolphy to shame.
14. Although I have changed a lot during the last ten years, South Park remains as one of my favorite shows.
15. It amuses me that saying something as simple as "you don't know that" can change a life.
16. I like "dad drinks" (pang-tatay hahaha) and waitresses/bar tenders always do double takes after I tell them what I'm having.
17. When it is time to move on, I'd like to live in a "home". It could be anywhere in the world, any structure imaginable as long as it is a place of refuge and love.
18. I count my blessings. During interesting times, I kick myself to remember.
19. I am probably the only person who thinks that the living room is not the place for the telly.
20. I love movies.
21. Decisions are hard only when you know what you have to do, but you don't want to do it.
22. My favorite children's book is Dumbo. Yes, the flying elephant. I remember crying each time my Yaya Anita would read it to me. I am still on the lookout for a replica of the copy I had of it as a child. If I get to read one book to children, I'd pick this.
23. I am terrified of frogs. I find that I am sometimes afraid of flipping through Nat Geo-ish magazines, as I might chance upon a frog photo.
24. I miss her. My Yaya Anita. I have hopes of seeing her again. She has been that person who always cheered me up and believed in me, sometimes even more that I believed in myself. She always insisted on making me the bida. Stage mother. I knew she always wanted the best for me. She religiously came with me to swimming lessons, volleyball games or whatever new thing I was engaging in. During my birthday, Christmas or whenever she feels like it, she would take her hard earned money and buy me something I like, she says that it made her happy. She really made me feel loved. Losing her was my darkest hour. It beat losing a boyfriend--or four. I wish I could have been more expressive of how I felt about her, I have a sinking feeling that I might have made it seem that I resented her. I pray that she is safe and happy where she is and that in any small way, she knows how much of an impact she had on my life.
25. I don't frequent the kitchen but I love to cook. Sometimes I run ingredients in my head and think of an occasion when I could prepare such dish. I also want to own a set of razor sharp knives (it doesn't have to be valyrian steel as I am not slaying the others) and copper pans.

how about some yarn and knitting needles?
If I list down the things that I did today, you'd tell me to get a cat (or a cactus).
- Watched Private Practice (finished the entire season)
- Started (and finished) reading He's just not that into you
- Went to the gym <-- this totally destroys the list
- Ate a bag of Chippy (original flavor) after my afternoon nap
- Had tacos for lunch. Three. Crushed in a bowl. Taken in front of my laptop while watching an ebay auction end.
- Decided which shoes I would wear tomorrow (and Thursday--and Friday)
- Thought of writing a blog entry about He's just not that into you
- Replied to a kid cousin's wall-to-wall message in Facebook
- Sent an offline message to a friend in YM
- Wrote a blog entry about how a free day was spent

what happens in Bali (stays in Obet's HD)
Strange things happen in Bali. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
- alleged mean girls return to innocence
- submissive girlfriends demand to be carried
- nice guys turn cranky
- tom yam is treated like a local delicacy
- boys touch paintings
- runners play/dance/stuff with bottles
- snotty girls assist the needy
- honor students forget that tissue absorbs water
- essay writing champions attempt to unclog sinks
- tim tams are popped into mouths like peanuts
- sun quick concentrate is mixed 1:10 with vodka
- super heroes hit trees
- ginger roosters are deadly weapons
- cigarettes ask for luck
- softdrink cans grow tall and skinny
- strange men puke near showers in use
- lovers stay lovers
- dancers stay dancers
- she remains a lover, not a dancer
- friends stop to enjoy the sunset

accountaBALIbuddies
Returning from a fun trip always sucks.
I remember not only being scared for my life (as we were booked by the travel agent with Garuda Airlines) with every turbulence, but also feeling melancholy during the flight back from Bali. There was this familiar end of day vibe again. Something I never quite get used to.
Now that I am lying on my bed, I can't help but smile to myself in remembrance of our latest getaway that might as well be the Bali trip for me.
Just so that we are clear, there is no talk of greatest love here, just the happiest time spent in Bali.

carbo loading
As I am trying to cut down on time spent getting to the office (and maybe save a few bucks too), I decided to buy a loaf of bread to keep on my desk. I can eat it for breakfast on weekdays. The idea seemed perfect, until the end of day 1, wherein I realized that I have managed to eat half the loaf within the day.
I guess this is saying that it is lousy idea because (1) I ended up eating more, (2) spending more and (3) saving time only on alternate days as a loaf would last me two days.
So much to fine tunning my habits, but you can't blame a BIRTHDAY girl for trying.
